Large Hay Storage Shed

How Big Should I Build My Hay Shed?

There are four main questions to consider when deciding how big your hay shed needs to be:

  1. What size hay bales do you plan to store? — Do you need to store 8’x4’x3’, 8’x4’x4’ or Round Bales: (4’ x 4’). This will help you determine your total size in conjunction with the number of bales you need to store.
  2. How many bales do you plan to store? — Do you have a lot of hay to store? What is the maximum number of bales you’d expect to have in your shed at one time? This is when it’s best to overestimate a little to ensure you don’t run out of space.
  3. How high can you stack them? — With the existing equipment and machinery you have, how high can you stack the bales? Common shed heights allow for 5 or 6 bales high.
  4. Will the shed fit on the site you want it? — Lastly, but importantly, will a shed big enough to store all your hay fit on the site where you want it placed?

Do I need Building Approval Or A Permit To Build A Hay Shed On My Farm?

Generally, hay sheds with a total footprint of less than 200m2 will be classified as an exempt development and won’t need council approval. Sheds between 200 and 500m2 will generally be classified as class 10a buildings and will require basic approval, while sheds between 500m2 and 2000m2 total footprint will be classified as a “Farm Shed” class 7b building in the 2021 BCA and will need a more extensive approvals process. Buildings with a floor area above 2000m2 are classified as a “Farm Building” class 7b or class 8 depending on the usage and also require an extended approvals process. However, our expert team and in-house town planner can work with you and your local council to manage the approvals process from start to finish, even on the most complicated building classes. This is all a part of our unique Smart Build System. For more information on the council approvals process, we have put together an article that covers this in more detail, or you can reach out to our expert team.
